Senior Software Engineer (AI)

Contract: full time

LOCATION: Elephant & Castle, London (Hybrid – 3 days/week in office)

Information on the company

This startup’s mission is to keep small and medium-sized businesses in the trades local and thriving, by acquiring them in a way that keeps the original owner invested in what comes next. The business acquires owner-operated service businesses in sectors like electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and foundations. It runs an AI-enabled playbook across quoting, scheduling, CRM, invoicing, and inspections to expand margins and capacity, while keeping the original owneroperator rolled in and aligned through integration.

Having just closed its Series A, the business is now preparing to acquire its first business. The team has structured the deal and is building the process, infrastructure, and AI tooling needed to operate it from day one, with further acquisitions to follow as the model is proven out. The founding team brings deep transactional and operating experience, spanning construction tech, M&A, and leveraged finance, with backgrounds including high-growth logistics and construction-tech start-ups, and senior corporate development and investment banking roles at major listed companies and global investment banks.

ABOUT THE ROLE

THIS IS NOT FOR YOU IF…

  • You’re not genuinely passionate about AI, or struggle to see how it embeds into real workflows

  • You’ve never built an AI agent and don’t want to start now

  • You’d rather join something established than build the technical foundation from scratch

  • You need a fully scoped backlog before you can move, rather than working through ambiguity

  • You want to work in isolation rather than alongside a small, high-ownership founding team

  • You’d rather manage and direct others, or polish and fix, than build things yourself

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Work directly alongside the Tech Lead to build the AI-enabled operating platform from the ground up, ahead of the company’s first acquisition

  • Help design and build the systems that will power quoting, scheduling, CRM, invoicing, and inspections for the newly acquired business

  • Build applied AI tools and automations that will be embedded directly into the day-to-day workflows of the acquired business

  • Help define technical architecture, conventions, and tooling as an early engineer on a brand new team

  • Work closely with the Co-Founders to translate the realities of an owner-operated trades business into a working technical roadmap

  • Get close to the business itself once acquired, speaking with operators, understanding real workflows, and shipping tools people actually want to use

  • Help shape how AI gets integrated into the business as it’s brought into the platform, and as future acquisitions follow

The ideal candidate…

  • Has hands-on experience building AI agents, whether through a side hustle, side project, or while working. What matters most is genuine passion and curiosity for AI

  • Has a strong interest in LLM orchestration, prompt engineering, and the practical tradeoffs of building reliable AI systems

  • Has built software from scratch in an early-stage environment, as a personal project, or in a corporate environment

  • Has around four years’ professional experience, either in a startup, or, if in the corporate sector, has strong entrepreneurial passion with plenty of side projects

  • Is genuinely passionate about AI and wants to spend their career pushing what it can do inside real businesses, not just digital products

  • Thrives in high ambiguity, where there is no fully scoped backlog and the roadmap is being built as you go

  • Wants to be an early AI hire on a brand new team, with real ownership over technical direction

Why work here?

  • The opportunity to be an early AI engineer at a fast-moving, well-backed platform with a clear thesis and an anchor deal already structured

  • Direct exposure to the founders and the commercial side of the business, not just engineering

  • Real ownership over how AI gets built into operating businesses from day one, not just software for software’s sake

  • A small, ambitious team with deep operating and finance credentials

  • Hybrid working from a London office in Elephant & Castle

  • Two offsites a year, in the US and the Caribbean

  • Opportunities to travel to the company’s headquarters in Montréal, Canada

ADDITIONAL NOTES

  • You’ll be working closely with the Tech Lead, who is based in Canada

  • There’s flexibility on how the team connects in person: the Tech Lead can come to London for onboarding, or you may have the opportunity to travel to Canada

  • You’ll be an early engineer on the team, working directly alongside the Tech Lead and founders

  • You’ll be working UK hours, not Canadian hours

INTERVIEW PROCESS

  • Chat with TableCrowd Talent team (video, 45 mins)

  • Two-hour in-office interview, including a video call with the Tech Lead and Canadian team

  • Final round: two-hour interview, including a technical task and a video call with other CoFounders based in Canada
